About Soka Funeral Service

At Embrace Funeral Services, we are dedicated to helping families honour and celebrate the life of their dearly departed loved one with our Soka funeral services in Singapore.

Soka funeral services embrace the teachings of Soka Gakkai, a Japanese Buddhist religious movement that supports peace, culture and education.

In the context of funerals, the Soka Gakkai teaches that death is a natural part of life and that it is important to honour the memory of the deceased while also providing comfort and support to their loved ones. The Soka funeral ceremony is designed to do just that – it honours the life of the deceased while also providing comfort and reassurance to their family and friends.

By understanding the philosophy and beliefs of the Soka Gakkai, you can better understand the values that guide Soka funeral services and why they may be a meaningful option for commemorating the life of a loved one.

What is a Soka funeral?

A Soka funeral is a traditional Japanese Buddhist funeral service. The purpose of a Soka funeral ceremony is to remember, appreciate and celebrate the life of the deceased.

During a Soka funeral service, the Daimoku sutra is chanted by a Soka Gakkai leader to help the deceased transition peacefully and to pray for the repose of their soul. The sutra is also chanted to support and comfort those who have been left behind by offering reassurance that loved ones who have passed away will be in a better place.

What to expect for a Soka funeral service in Singapore

Soka funerals are simpler and not as elaborate rituals as conventional Buddhist funerals. The Soka funeral ritual begins with a wake, where family and friends can pay their respects to the deceased by offering flowers and incense.

This is followed by sutras chanting at the funeral wake. The sutras are chanted to help the deceased find peace and to bring comfort and solace to those present.

The Soka funeral will then conclude with a memorial service, which includes prayers for the deceased as well as remembrances shared by family members, friends and loved ones of the deceased.

Role of a funeral director at a Soka funeral

The role of a funeral director at a Soka funeral is to ensure that the ceremony is conducted in accordance with Soka traditions and practices. Funeral directors provide support, guidance and comfort to families during this difficult time.

They help to organise sutras chanting sessions, set up wake venues, arrange memorial services and more. In addition, they also coordinate all aspects of the Soka funeral service including transportation, embalming handling and encoffin service, collection of deceased, cremation and ash collection.

The Soka Gakkai is a Buddhist organization that was founded in Japan in 1930. It is based on the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin, a 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk who taught that all people have the potential for enlightenment and that the Lotus Sutra is the ultimate teaching of Buddhism.

Soka Gakkai members are committed to promoting peace, culture, and education, and they believe that these values are essential for creating a harmonious and just society. In Singapore, the Soka Gakkai movement is led by Soka Gakkai Singapore (SGS), formerly known as the Singapore Soka Association (SSA). SGS is under the parent organisation of the Soka Gakkai that is present in 192 countries worldwide.
